Emotional Intelligent engineers use this simple rule to cope with failures

You’re working on a potential ground breaking project, but somehow you’ve made several unsuccessful attempts to reach those desired results.

Nothing’s quite working out for you, and now you are in complete despair.

In times of crisis when there’s no hope, ‘resilience’ can become a savior. It’s the very key to all your real problems.

This blog guides you through a simple rule that can help you work with emotional intelligence at a time when you are on the brink of giving up.

Mehmet II quotes, resilience

How resilience can help cope with failures?

The ability to recover from, or adjust easily to misfortune or change is called resilience.

It’s the magic spell that fixates things for you when it seems almost impossible.

How resilience works?

Resilience preserves your sanity and enables you to see new paths.

A simple rule called “Adapting to Change” is a resilience powered principle that works through when you are in an abysmal spiral of problems.

What does adapting to change means?

Changing your approach as per the situation, ensued from dwelling on sound strategies, is what we mean when we say ‘adapting to change’.

Au contrary, sticking to just a single path reduces resilience. You lose a vast majority of hidden possibilities when you refuse to look outside the box.

Let’s take an example scenario wherein you are stuck in a project that, so far, unsuccessfully reaches its desired results.

As a resilient engineer you would take a sequential approach something as similar as this:

1- Taking a break.

First things first. Drink some water, wash your face, and try to breathe.

While feeling anxious is completely normal, it’s important to turn back to a normal thinking state to plan your next move.

2- Thinking of options.

Now that your blood pressure is normal again, it’s the optimal time to sit down and think!

You would ask yourself a single fundamental question:

What’s the best thing I can do to secure my victory?

  1. Maybe I should seek help from experts?
  1. Maybe I need to improve my coding skills?
  1. Maybe I need to dig deeper in the concept so that I can rebuild my ideal project?

A successful engineer =  seeking + skill building + learning.

Seeking social support is tremendous when working on projects. You can’t do it all alone.

Look around you and search for those who can offer expert advice for your project. Don’t hesitate to wisely invest your resources if it’s worth the cause.

Meanwhile, it’s as important to gain expertise yourself as it’s to seek from others. If a lack in your skills is the problem, simply take time to invest in the skill itself. Plan your 24 hours wisely, invest your time in learning the required skills.

Finally, a strong foundation and understanding of what you’re dealing with is compulsory, and frankly speaking, a lot of people don’t realize the fact that digging deeper into the functioning of things can change a lot for them.

3- Prioritizing your options.

Once you are done with the brain storming, the resulting options that are available at your disposal should be prioritized.

Carefully plan your strategy and sort each one based on how well it can serve your project.

4- Applying.

Now it’s time to apply each solution. Remember to take feedback and adjust accordingly.

Lastly, repeat from step 1 if you need to.

A few words on how to improve resilience.

Adaptability, as a dimension of resilience (which we discussed above), is just a single component, and there are five other dimensions of resilience that can shape your emotional intelligence.

These are the:

  1. Optimism: How much hope do you see in times of crisis?
  2. Self-esteem: How much regard do you have for yourself?
  3. Perseverance: How much are you willing to try again and again?
  4. Assertiveness: Do you remain calm and composed when defending your point of view?
  5. Unbiasedness: Do you unnecessarily favor some elements?

Developing an emotional awareness of these, and managing your emotions can help you overcome feelings of despair in testing times (ultimately improving your emotional quotient EQ).

Knowing the feeling, assessing the impact of responding in a specific way, and deciding a constructive path is an act of “managing emotions”, states an acclaimed writer Mark Manson.

You may find out which dimensions you think lack in you and those that you feel are strong. Focus on one component at a time, and improve from first to the next. Within sometime you will see, your mental capacity in uncertain times has improved.
